Difficult to say as I am new to the firm but, like most of Cambridge, parking is limited (i.e. ~150 spaces in an office that is designed for 450+ heads). It's clear the positive contribution Abcam is making to the progression of science and serving life scientists to achieve their mission, faster. This in itself is quite rewarding and motivating. Very collaborative and open environment, particularly pleased with the companies efforts to build a more diverse and inclusive workplace. Always lots of interesting and new projects going on. The company is also keen to allow people to move between teams, which is a nice way to learn new skills and broaden your horizons. The pace of change can be a little overwhelming sometimes, especially the near-constant restructuring. You definitely have to be open to change and learn to go with the flow! Ver publicación enlazadaThe culture of care is amazing here. Everyone from line managers right up to the tippy top CEO actually care about their employees. Abcam is also pretty well funded so, unlike other companies, you're not cutting important resources just to make budget each month. Also, if you're in the Cambridge site, you get to work in a gorgeous building that's full of eco-friendly features. The only one I can think of is not being able to drive to work every day. Especially now the Cambridge, UK headquarters has moved to the Biomedical Campus at Addenbrooks…the work environment looks and feels much more professional and modern. A purpose-driven company; with the desire to save lives through medical research. Whilst that doesn’t necessary show up in every meeting, it does determine the type of people they hire and work with. Everyone is here to do good work and make a difference, without too much ego. Very friendly, real, relaxed, yet hard working/fast-paced culture. A conversation-driven management culture; whereby employees and mangers are encouraged to talk through issues together, rather than email/escalate/document. A great new office space in Cambridge; lots of non-bookable meeting spaces, some stand-up desks, a fully hot desking environment with personal lockers, showers, towel hire, drying room etc. Free (good quality) barista coffee & a forward-thinking café with healthy options; menu changes daily. Currently a VERY attractive share scheme available for all employees. Dress code is essentially just come as yourself, which means there’s much less bravado/show than other corporates. As I understand, Cambridge council want to reduce the number of cars in the city, so Abcam were only allowed a limited car park size for the new building. This means you don’t get a car parking space every day. Most people park in one of the park & rides then walk/cycle to work. Whilst the Senior Management are far better than most I’ve seen, there are still behaviours that permeate the culture. They are an ambitious team but that leads to a lot of pressure to deliver magic results. When things don’t go their way, there is a tendency to blame, rather than take ownership as a leadership team. It is often up to one or two leaders to shelve the blame, rather than the senior team pulling together. The top team can be too quick to judge someone from hero to zero. You always work with many departments, not in isolation. Growing company. Poor salaries for an stressful environment. No career path defined for many middle roles . Ver publicación enlazadaThe company culture is fantastic and the company is in growth so hiring regularly. I have never worked in a friendlier, more productive place. The whole ethos is about employee engagement, empowered productivity, trust and fun. There are regular social events for the whole company provided by the company. These are usually incredibly well attended, enjoyable and fantastic networking opportunities. Every quarter there is a state of the nation address from the executive board to the entirety of Abcam, this ensures that everyone is on the same page, aware of what's going on and engaged with KPIs. The company trusts its employees implicitly and this is rewarded tenfold. The access to the computers, product data, the database and home working are all virtually unrestricted and provides very little in the way of IT system bureaucracy and barriers to productivity. I don't think I've worked in a better company ever and will hopefully be at this company in many roles in the future. Abcam engenders loyalty and trust, without asking for it. It's a natural, fun, ebullient and engaging place to work. The availability of food on the science park isn't great. There is an M&S van that arrives outside the buildings at random times, otherwise there is a fantastic Food Park, which is a varied collection of street food vendors from different and exciting cuisines. The Food Park is great, but only available on Tuesdays & Thursdays. Tesco is a short drive away, but over the A14 junction roundabout. There is no available food on the science park permanently. Sometimes feels like a dead-end job, no career progression, no salary scale progression, Salary benchmarking is weak. Several middle managers appear to be poor at their job and would rather be doing something else. Left hand doesn't know what right hand is doing.
